Cross-Connection Testing: What Is It and Why Do I Need It?

A cross-connection test is a yearly inspection of your irrigation system’s backflow prevention device. Completed by a certified technician, these tests are required for any system that connects with a potable water supply. In accordance with the National Plumbing Code of Canada, these irrigation systems must have a testable backflow preventer and must be tested by a certified professional prior to use on an annual basis.

Understanding Cross-Connections and Backflow Prevention

A cross-connection is the point where your potable water supply connects to an external system, such as your underground sprinklers.

Backflow in these systems occurs when water reverses direction, potentially contaminating the potable water. This can happen due to a drop in water pressure (siphonage) or an external pressure increase (backpressure). A backflow prevention, or cross-connection device, is designed to stop this reversal, ensuring contaminants don’t enter the potable water supply.

Why Is the Test Necessary?

Nearly all municipalities in Alberta require a functioning backflow preventer on any cross-connection that could contaminate the water supply. Even if your sprinkler system appears clean, potential contaminants, such as fertilizers, pesticides, and dirt, can compromise the water quality if backflow occurs. Proper testing:

  • Ensures the device is working properly.
  • Protects your community’s drinking water.
  • Complies with municipal regulations.

In Calgary, tests must be performed by a certified professional and documented with the proper paperwork before your system is activated each spring.

If left unchecked, you could be risking the safety of your community’s drinking water, and face fines of up to $1,500 in Alberta.

Cross-connection backflow can also damage surrounding ecosystems, wildlife, and plant life, causing damage to the environment.

When and Who Should Perform the Test?

The City of Calgary requires that the test be conducted at the beginning of the watering season, prior to turning your system on. Booking your test from mid-March to the end of April, provides ample time for testing so your system can be reactivated in May, once the ground thaws.

Testing must be completed by certified technicians holding a Backflow Tester’s Certificate from the American Water Works Association. At Naiad Irrigation, we have the most certified technicians in Canada. All our specialists are backflow certified and members of the Irrigation Association.

Costs and Service Options

The cost of cross-connection testing varies depending on who is completing the work. At Naiad Irrigation, we charge a flat rate of $170 for a single cross-connection test. For added convenience and worry-free irrigation maintenance, we offer an annual membership for $23 per month, which includes automatic spring scheduling after the first year.

No matter who you call for your cross-connection testing, in Calgary you should expect to pay under $200.

What Happens if I Skip the Test?

Skipping cross-connection testing can result in serious consequences, above and beyond the hefty fines. Failure to comply could result in your sprinkler system not being activated, water service interruptions, and potential liability for any damages due to contaminated potable water.
